The History of Memory Foam Mattresses

Sleep Options Memory Foam Mattress, Natural Latex Mattress, Pillows, Sleep AccessoriesAlmost everyone knows what a memory foam mattress is, but do you know how one of the most comfortable mattress options was created? In 1966, NASA’s Ames Research Center set out to produce a material that would increase the comfort in aircraft cushions. During take-off, astronauts had to deal with pressure that was generated from gravitational forces. Memory foam helped to relieve this tension because its properties would conform to the astronauts’ bodies, and absorbed the shock from lift-off.

Memory foam, also known as visco-elastic foam, softens in reaction to body heat and conforms to one’s shape. Once pressure is taken off, memory foam’s natural shape is restored. Charles Yost, a scientist who helped develop memory foam, found that these properties could be useful in different kinds of products. He collaborated with NASA and founded Dynamic Systems, Inc. The company then introduced memory foam to various manufactured goods, including sports gear such as helmet liners, and medical equipment such as x-ray table toppers.

NASA released memory foam to the public in the 1980’s. From there, a large foam producing company decided to experiment with the material in order to perfect it for consumer products. It wasn’t until the early 90’s that memory foam was introduced into the bedding industry. The product was first sold to hospitals that used the foam for patients who had been suffering from bed sores and needed more comfort.

Once it was launched in mattress form, memory foam became a popular selection for customers. Those who had been suffering from back pains, muscle strains, and sleep deprivation, amongst other sleep disorders, were finally offered a product that would cure some of their problems.

When memory foam first entered the market, it was priced very high. But since its introduction, many manufacturers caught wind of how beneficial this type of product would be for consumers, and jumped on the memory foam bandwagon. Today, memory foam is used in a variety of bedding products, including mattresses, mattress toppers and pillows.

Because the memory foam mattress industry became popular for many manufacturers, it is important to recognize cheap imitators!
